January is Glaucoma Awareness Month
We at Kopolow & Girisgen Doctors of Optometry are proud to celebrate Glaucoma Awareness Month this January. Please take a few minutes to learn about risk factors and warning signs of glaucoma, and find out what you can do today to protect your eye health.
Glaucoma Risk Factors
If you have certain vision or general health conditions, you may be at increased risk for glaucoma. Risk factors include:
- Having a family history of glaucoma
- Medical conditions including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, estrogen deficiency, or sickle cell anemia
- Having nearsightedness, eye surgery, high intraocular eye pressure, or other eye injuries
- Being African-American, Hispanic, or over age 60
Changes to your vision may be symptoms of glaucoma. If you have blurred or patchy vision, eye pain, or see halos around lights, we invite you to make a Las Vegas eye exam appointment with our optometrists. We can test your eyes to see whether you may have glaucoma. With early detection, glaucoma is treatable!
Las Vegas Eye Doctor Can Treat Glaucoma
If you have pre-glaucoma or glaucoma, we can help. Early treatments aim to lower the pressure in the eye. We may recommend using eye drops, taking oral medication, having eye surgery, or having laser treatment to do this. We may refer you to an ophthalmologist for comprehensive testing, or refer you to an eye surgeon if we feel surgery is your best option. We can coordinate with that surgeon on your pre- and post-operative care, so you can get the help you need from professionals you trust.
There are many ways to preserve your vision and slow the effects of glaucoma. The best thing you can do to protect your eye health is have regular visits with our eye doctor. We recommend that adults see an eye doctor once a year. If you are at risk for glaucoma, we may recommend that you visit us more frequently.
