Computer Vision Syndrome

Today, computer vision syndrome (CVS), may more accurately be referred to by its alternative name: digital eye strain. You don't need to use a computer to experience CVS. In fact, any digital device that you use for a long time may lead to the symptoms associated with CVS. If you have computer vision syndrome, come see an optometrist at Kopolow & Girisgen Doctors of Optometry in Las Vegas for an evaluation and treatment.

WHAT IS COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME?

Computer vision syndrome causes problems both in your eyes and the rest of your body. It commonly occurs from using any type of digital screen for too long. That means you can suffer from CVS even if you never use a computer.

Computer vision syndrome is caused from the stress that your eyes undergo while trying to focus on a brightly lit, slightly flickering screen. Reflection of light from the room on the glass of your screen can also impact your eye's focus, leading to computer vision syndrome symptoms.

Staring at a lit screen can strain your eyes, causing blurry vision, headaches, and dry eyes. You may also have neck pain or strain from bending over to use your digital device. You can change your posture or the ambient lighting to prevent the onset of computer vision syndrome. If these preventative measures don't help with your symptoms, you may need to schedule a visit with an optometrist.

How an Optometrist Diagnoses Computer Vision Syndrome

During a comprehensive eye exam, an optometrist will pinpoint what exactly is causing your blurry vision and dry eyes. Additionally, the eye doctor will examine the way your eyes focus and move. Through this exam and reports of your symptoms, the optometrist can make a diagnosis.

Treatment Options for CVS

If you have computer vision syndrome, your eye doctor may suggest making changes to your work station or how you use your cell phone to reduce stress on your eyes. You may also need a special set of glasses or contacts to help you to see your computer clearly without straining your eyes. Vision therapy may help some people to recover from CVS, too.
