Have you ever noticed small specks drifting through your field of vision or seen brief flashes of light that appear without an obvious source? These visual disturbances, known as floaters and flashes, are common and, in many cases, harmless. However, there are times when they may signal a more serious eye condition requiring immediate attention.
Floaters often appear as tiny dots, threads, or cobweb-like shapes drifting across your vision, especially when looking at a bright background like a clear sky or white wall. They are small clumps of collagen or cells within the vitreous - the gel-like substance inside your eye. As we age, the vitreous begins to shrink and pull away from the retina, a process known as posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), which is a common cause of floaters.
Flashes look like brief bursts or streaks of light, often described as lightning-like. These flashes occur when the vitreous tugs on the retina. While occasional flashes can be a natural part of the aging process, frequent or sudden flashes may indicate a more serious issue, such as a retinal tear or detachment.
In most cases, occasional floaters and infrequent flashes are not dangerous. However, you should see your optometrist immediately if you experience any of the following:
These symptoms may be warning signs of a retinal tear or detachment, which can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated promptly.
At Kopolow & Girisgen, Doctors of Optometry, we use advanced imaging and dilated eye exams to examine the vitreous and retina closely. If a retinal issue is suspected, we can refer you to a retinal specialist for further evaluation and treatment. If no serious cause is found, we’ll continue to monitor your eye health and advise on how to manage benign floaters.
While floaters and flashes are often a normal part of the aging process, they can sometimes indicate a more serious issue with your eyes. Paying attention to changes in your vision and knowing when to seek help can make all the difference in protecting your sight.
If you're experiencing new or worsening flashes and floaters, schedule an eye exam with Kopolow & Girisgen, Doctors of Optometry, to ensure your vision stays healthy and clear. Text GLASSES to 21000, call us at (702) 452-2020, or book an appointment online Here.
